This summer, Global Vets is allowing us the opportunity to partake in the experience of a lifetime aiding in the treatment and care of animals abroad. We will learn about the healthcare and husbandry of both exotic species and companion animals at our projects from some amazing organizations that do so much to aid animals in need.

Our first project will be at Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand where we will spend one week rehabilitating injured elephants that have been rescued from the tourism and logging industry. This organization works hard to use positive reinforcement while treating the elephants, and we are very excited to learn from them and aid them however we can. We then plan to spend a week volunteering at Elephant Nature Park’s dog sanctuary, which houses several hundred dogs, many rescued from the 2011 floods in Bangkok. We will be performing parasite control and treating wounds of injured dogs. Next, we will travel to a dog and cat rescue centre in Koh Samui, an island off the coast of Thailand.  There, we will assist in a multitude of activities to aid the organization, including wound control, parasite control, and sterilization.  We also hope to assist in educating the local communities about basic preventive health care for their pets.  We plan to end our journey in Indonesia, working with rescued exotic species at Cikananga Wildlife Centre.
We will be using the veterinary skills we have learned during our time at OVC to provide help to the animals in need while learning more about the cultures and traditions of local communities.  Our hope is that we will be able to provide as much assistance as possible to these projects, while learning veterinary skills from them to share with our colleagues back in Canada. We will be returning to some of the same projects the Global Vets alumni previously participated in with hopes of maintaining contacts and developing new relationships with colleagues overseas.
We are extremely grateful to have been accepted into this program and cannot wait to have the opportunity to make a positive impact on people and animals around the world. We would like to thank you for your support and we welcome you to follow us on our journey!
